Not Ready For Prime Time : Bushnell GPS BackTrack Personal Locator (Camo)

I got my backtrack a few days ago and I immediately wanted to put it to the test. I'm a gadget freak so I tested it in several parking lots and it took only about one minute to lock the satellite signal every time, I was pleased about that, I went to do some errands and it took me back to my car missing it for about 20 feet, 7 out of 10 times. I tested the compass when I was inside of a building and it kept pointing at the wrong direction, a different occasion I had a visual of the direction of my car through a window while I was in a building, and the backtrack was pointing me into the wrong direction, it corrected the direction as soon as I stepped out of the building. I was driving around and wanted it to direct me back home, it was giving me the right distance, but pointing in the wrong direction while driving. So in conclusion I can say that it works pretty good when you are outdoors, but if you are inside of a vehicle or indoors, is not very reliable. I like it anyway and it's specially nice when you go hiking. It will get you back to the camp or to your car in the middle of the woods, but in a parking lot, it might miss it for a line of cars, that's not nice when you have a cart full of groceries and you have to go around to the next lane of cars because the backtrack missed it for 20 or 30 feet. If you are in a mall and want the backtrack to point you the direction to exit the mall to get to your car, you might have to wait until you are out of the mall to redirect you to your car, finding out that a different mall exit was much closer to your car than the one that you took following the indications of the backtrack.

Get to where you were : Bushnell GPS BackTrack Personal Locator (Green)

I bought this mainly to help find my car in parking lots and for trips abroad to help find my way back to the hotel. I tried it out first at a mall near home, one time when I was able to get a GPS lock. When I turned it back on after leaving the store, it could not get a lock. So it was useless. On the rare occasion it did get a lock, the display was arbitrary and not very accurate. In Europe, it never acquired a GPS signal so it was useless there as well. I don't know if my particular unit is defective or if I just happened to be in areas with limited GPS availability, but our car GPS and my phone GPS both work flawlessly everywhere. So for me, this was a total waste of money.

It is a great concept, and maybe if they spent a bit more to improve it's sensitivity, although it would be a bit more expensive, I'd rather pay more for something that works than pay less for a paperweight. I would recommend that anyone who purchases this device, retain the original packaging in case you need to return it.

Timber, rocks, or even fish--watch it all take shape on a crystal-clear, full-color, 5-inch display. Maximize Your Angling Experience

Down Imaging

Humminbird has pointed their Side Imaging technology in a new direction: straight down. Now you can see the detail of what is happening below your boat. Timber, brush, bridge pilings, rocks and any other structure will pop with stunning detail as you patrol the water. Take a peek; you'll like what you see.

DualBeam Plus

Get the best of both worlds, with selectable narrow and wide beams you can view individually, or melded into one display. A precision 20° beam provides high accuracy returns of fish, structure, and bottom profile. The wider 60° beam provides greater coverage for fish and bait fish. You can view the two beams separately, side by side, or blended together for the most complete picture.

Switchfire Sonar

When you hit the water, you don't limit yourself to one bait. So why limit your sonar? Exclusive Humminbird SwitchFire Sonar gives you the power to choose how returns are displayed. With two unique modes, you have complete control to adjust with the fishing conditions, making our down-looking sonar an even more valuable fishfinding tool.

Down Imaging lets you see the detail of what is happening below your boat.

Fish like a pro on your home lake, or a lake far from home, thanks to Humminbird ContourXD maps of over 3000 lakes.

Split Screen Zoom increases the displayed resolution to separate sonar returns that are very close together.

Split Screen Zoom

Split Screen Zoom increases the displayed resolution to separate sonar returns that are very close together. In this view, the display is split to show a narrow slice of the full range view on the right and the zoomed view on the left. The zoom preview box on the right tracks the bottom in the full range view.

Freeze Frame/Structure Marking

Pressing any arrow on the four-way cursor control instantly stops the sonar graphic display to allow a closer inspection of submerged structure, bait fish, and underwater contours. Movable cursor feature allows you to instantly discern depth of any sonar return and mark waypoints from the sonar screen for navigation. Pressing the EXIT key will exit the freeze frame and the display will start to resume scrolling. Mark the location of fish-attracting structure, bottom transitions, or any feature anywhere on traditional sonar with the Sonar Cursor.

Selective Fish ID+

Fish ID+ uses advanced sonar processing to interpret sonar returns, and displays a Fish Symbol when very selective requirements are met. When a fish is detected, a fish icon and its depth are displayed above the return that has been classified as being a fish. Three different fish icons represent intensity of the sonar return, and provide an indicator of relative fish size.

Real Time Sonar (RTS) Window

A Real Time Sonar (RTS) Window appears on the right side of the display in the Sonar View only. The RTS Window always updates at the fastest rate possible and shows only the returns from the bottom, structure, and fish that are within the transducer beam. The RTS window can be displayed as narrow (standard), wide, or off.

Sonar Echo Enhancement

Sonar Echo Enhancement shows fish, bait, and more--even watch your vertical jigging on-screen. This is possible through advanced sonar processing and provides the details you want and need. It's important to know what depth the fish are located and equally important to be able to place your lure at that precise depth. Be careful! You may jerk the rod early while watching the screen instead of waiting for the actual bite.

TreuArch Technology

Many competitive sonar products commonly use post processing software to "enhance" the arching effect produced when suspended targets enter and leave a sonar beam. This additional processing can slow down performance and exaggerate the information displayed. Humminbirds TrueArch Technology utilizes parallel processing of sonar data to eliminate unwanted interference and noise and reveal unaltered sonar echoes resulting in true arches of fish targets. This helps anglers more quickly discern the size and depth of fish targets.

Built-In U.S. ContourXD Maps

Humminbird has upgraded the free, built-in cartography software on the 900 series Combo models. All-new ContourXD by Navionics is an enhanced, professional mapping package. With over 3,000 U.S. lake maps in the database, you will be able to find a lake close to any location you might want to wet a line. As an added bonus, ContourXD maps will feature depth contour lines, so you can find all the drops, bumps and channels holding fish. The maps will also include U.S. lights/markers, and major roads and interstates. Fish like a pro on your home lake, or a lake far from home, thanks to Humminbird ContourXD.
